GET IT NOWEssential Fats
Fats are essential on any low carb or keto diet – they are major keto staples! Choose minimally processed animal fats and oils. Avoid corn, soy, and canola oil.
TIP: You don’t have to buy every type of fat here, but a good mix is at least one liquid oil (olive or avocado oil) and at least one that’s solid at room temperature (coconut oil, butter, ghee, or lard). In recipes, liquid fats are often interchangeable other liquids, and solids with other solids.
Low Carb Flours
A low carb diet doesn’t mean you have to give up baked goods! Just replace wheat flour with low carb flours – and find recipes that use them.
Almond flour is the most common low carb flour (make sure you get blanched and finely ground!), but there are other alternatives as well. Be sure to browse my low carb almond flour recipes and low carb coconut flour recipes.
- Wholesome Yum Blanched Almond Flour – Blanched and super fine, for the best texture in baked goods. It’s one of the first keto ingredients I recommend stocking in your pantry.
- Wholesome Yum Organic Coconut Flour
- Wholesome Yum Psyllium Husk Powder – Makes keto breads chewy, and unlike some others, this one has the highest fiber content and won’t turn your baked goods purple.
- Sunflower seed meal
- Golden flax seed meal – Used as a binder, and also to make flax eggs

Low Carb Sweeteners
I recommend natural, sugar-free sweeteners for keto or low carb lifestyles. My favorite is monk fruit allulose blend, but plain allulose and erythritol are also good. In fact, I created my own line of Besti keto sweeteners because I wanted ones that taste like sugar and act like sugar!
If you are just starting to stock your pantry, sweeteners are one of the major keto ingredients that will make it easier to transition. Buy one granulated or crystallized sweetener for most applications and one powdered sweetener to cover recipes that need a smooth texture, like sauces, dressings, frostings, and so on.
For more information on all the different low carb sweeteners, check the guide on sugar substitutes and sweetener conversion calculator.
Besti Sugar-Free Sweeteners
- Monk fruit sweetener (with allulose) – crystallized & powdered & brown – I recommend starting with these 3!
- Keto simple syrup – monk fruit allulose blend in liquid form, for replacing liquid sweeteners
- Allulose sweetener – crystallized & powdered
- Erythritol – granulated & powdered
For a comparison, check this guide on the best keto sweeteners.
Other options:
Low Carb Baking Ingredients
You’ll want to have these low carb staples for baking on hand! Baking powder and xanthan gum will help with lift and texture, cocoa powder and chocolate will cover all your chocolate needs, and extracts add flavor.
- Wholesome Yum Keto Bread Mix
- Wholesome Yum Keto Pancake Mix
- Gluten-free baking powder
- Unsweetened cocoa powder
- Sugar-free dark chocolate
- Unsweetened baking chocolate
- Sugar-free chocolate chips
- Vanilla extract
- Xanthan gum
Low Carb Pantry Proteins
Chicken and beef broth are classic staples in soups, sauces, and more. But, often I prefer to use their bone broth equivalents for more flavor and collagen benefits. You can also buy gelatin or collagen directly in powder form, and the former makes a great natural thickener in baking, sauces, and more.
- Chicken broth
- Beef broth
- Chicken bone broth
- Beef bone broth
- Unflavored beef gelatin powder
- Collagen protein powder
Low Carb Dairy Alternatives
Even though low carb and keto diets allow dairy, many people prefer to avoid them. Even if you don’t, regular milk is high in carbs, so you need something else instead.
These dairy-free alternatives will replace milk in your collection of keto ingredients, but if you can tolerate it, heavy cream is fine to use as well.

0I have severe allergies to tree nuts, peanuts, and nut products, but can safely eat coconut and seeds. Any suggestions for staples, baking, meatloaf, etc??
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi LL, Don’t let being nut-free discourage you from keto! It’s very possible, although you have to get familiar with your options and their characteristics. Flax meal and chia seeds are great for baking and as a binder (see my recipe for Meatloaf here using flax meal). Coconut flour is excellent for baking, I like to use my Wholesome Yum Coconut Flour because the coconut flavor isn’t super prominent. Psyllium husk powder also works well for baking, as it gives baked goods a nice crumb. I’ve also recently started experimenting with lupin flour and it shows a lot of promise. The only catch with lupin flour is if you are sensitive to peanuts, you may get a similar reaction, so be sure to do your due diligence before experimenting. Of course, there are a few alternative milks available to you too – hemp, coconut, and cashew (if you can tolerate it). I hope this helps!
Steph
0Yum!
Angela
0Looks like my spouse and I are hopping on the Keto train. I tried Keto last year and started out rough and well the holidays didn’t help so I’m trying again and he’s trying it with me. I’m allergic to almonds. But been trying to use coconut flour, hard to figure out adjustments from almond flour measurements. Any advice? Especially on how to stick with it. I really want to be healthy and be done with the diabetic medicine. Btw, how do I get him off of Mountain Dew? :/
Love your website!!
Thank you,
Angela
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Angela, Coconut flour and almond flour are not interchangeable. They work differently in recipes, absorb moisture differently, and create different textures. Sunflower seed meal is sometimes a better replacement, and I recommend you check out my coconut flour recipes. This keto food list is also helpful if you’re getting started.

0Most of these products are out of the price range I am willing to spend, but I am excited to try the coconut chips as a snack!

0Hi Maya,
I have have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes. My doctor had mentioned various diets to follow and this was one of them, but not to take any ketone drink enhancers were her orders.
Do you feel this diet would help me avoid sugar & carbs? Any helpful tips would be appreciated. Right now, I’m lucky I have a vegetable garden that will be producing lots of good veggies this summer.
The health issue I’ve been having – blood pressure is under control with meds, overweight by 40 and now the pre-diabetic issues has hit me.
Will be doing some browsing around on your website.
Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions,
Sue
I am getting ready to retire in October so trying to get my A1C down before my next appointment in 2 months. I thought I was doing pretty good, staying on track, but then realized the milk I drink has too much sugar. Sad, as I love dairy products – grew up on a dairy farm.

0I checked on the beef broth you have linked and it contains sugar. Isn’t that not allowed? I’m very new to this and appreciate the guidance.
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Dianna, The amount of sugar used in this broth is low and considered negligible. Making your own beef stock is the best case, but if you don’t have the time to do that, then this is a decent option to use.
Brenda
0So much great information. Thank you!!
Looking forward to getting started.
Gretchen Garner
0Dear Maya,
I am so appreciative to what you are doing here. I have a weight problem and dealing with liver issues. And I have a wonderful, precocious, boisterous toddler boy that I’m raising with my elderly mother. Needless to say, it is impossible for me to find the time and mental acuity leftover after work and mom/daughter duties to figure out the nutritional values and shopping lists and recipes and OH MY! When I found your blog and with further investigation discovered you provide all those services for only 14.99 a month; I literally cried. THANK YOU MAYA! BLESS YOU!!!
Love,
Gretchen Garner ***gigi***

0Hi…Is there any way to print out the low carb pantry list without so many pages? I’d just like the list. Thank you!
Wholesome Yum A
0Hi Sally, a printable version of this list is one of the bonuses you can get when you pre-order my cookbook!
Jennifer
0This was superb! I loved it and can’t believe it’s keto. i Would make this even if I werenot on keto. The only small change I would make is to make the crust sweeter.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Jennifer, I’m glad you liked what you made, but can’t tell what it was. Did you intend to leave this comment on a recipe? I’d love to see it on that recipe’s comment page so that it can help other readers!
Debbie Austin
0Do you use salted or unsalted butter with the recipes?
Wholesome Yum L
0Hi Debbie, I use unsalted butter. This butter is the kind I like to use.
Saadia Habib
0Loved the detailed analysis of Keto diet!
Denise
0I have been doing Keto for two months and I’ve only lost 20 lbs. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, but I hope this site can help.
Irene
0No disrespect Denise, but if I lost 20 pounds in TWO months I would be STOKED! That’s two and a half ponds a week. I’m just getting started, but I’ve got to tell you, that kind of weight loos over that short period of time sounds like a very healthy rate. Keep up the good work and KEEP going! If I have those kind of results it will definitely motivate me to do the same. This is for life….blessings!!
Julie
0Chop bacon, then fry. Pour grease into a cup and keep in fridge for cooking just about everything instead of butter. Keep chopped bacon in the freezer for sprinkling on other dishes. Buy bags of frozen chopped broccoli, spinach, and riced cauliflower which are all handier to keep on hand than fresh. Freeze tomato paste by the tablespoon in a covered ice cube tray. Buy butter when it’s on sale and freeze. Bacon, too. We “eat” turkey bacon and use regular bacon in recipes. These tips help me stay on keto.
